Canine Kidney Disease

Barbara Mary Hanly

As some of the most important figures in our lives, keeping our pets safe and healthy is our number one priority. No matter what, we all want to ensure that our four-legged friends lead wholesome, happy and healthy lives and we do our utmost to prevent them getting illness in any way we can.

With recent rises in chronic kidney disease in both cats and dogs over the past few years, we thought it necessary to bring to attention how some simple lifestyle changes can help avoid this dangerous disease and ensure that our friends, fun and furry, live as long as pawsible.

What is Chronic Kidney Disease?

Known as Chronic Renal Failure (or CRF), this type of kidney disease is prolonged and develops after years of deterioration to the organs responsible for keeping our bodies free from toxins and nastiness.

In terms of our pets, both cats and dogs are at risk of CRF if they are failing to access the correct support in their daily diets. Caused by a prolonged harm to the kidney tissue, symptoms will not just instantly be present. Symptoms may include:

  • Increased thirst
  • Weight loss
  • Increased urination
  • Dull coat

However, these symptoms aren’t always indicative of kidney failure. Your pet’s veterinarian will take blood samples if these symptoms are present to determine if your furry friend is having renal issues.

Protecting your Pet

Used to filter out toxins and waste products on a daily basis, the kidneys are the superheroes of ours and our pets bodies. Like us humans, our pets need moisture in their diets to help support a healthy lifestyle. Without water, our kidneys work overtime to flush out harmful toxins that can lead to both acute and chronic kidney failure.

Ensuring your pet has access to water on a daily basis is a given but did you know the moisture in their food can help contribute to a happy and healthy lifestyle? Your dog's dry food might be something you want to keep an eye on as the extrusion process of creating your dog's dinners actually removes over 70% of the moisture within the food. Consistently eating food low in moisture can cause strain on your dog’s kidney potentially leading to problems in the future.

To avoid any issues such as this, we encourage that you purchase food with a high level of water content in the biscuits and even top your dog’s food such as healthy broths or specific toppers such as white fish to help maintain your dog’s body on a daily basis.

When it comes to our four-legged legends, a little hydration really does go a lovingly long way.
